Web Geek Café was created to introduce small business owners and beginning web developers to the world of open source software.
Having your own web site does not have to be difficult or prohibitively expensive, and you do not need an advanced degree in computer engineering to figure it all out. If you can figure out how to use a word processing program like Word then you have the ability to create your own web site, and if you are willing to put the time in to learn you can do it almost completely for free.
There are many software solutions, including Content Management Systems, Forums, Blog Systems, and Photo Galleries, that are created and supported by the global open source community free of charge. But if you've tried to work with any of these, you may have found that the real cost of use is the serious commitment of time, effort, and sometimes frustration required to learn how each one works. Web Geek Café sessions make climbing that initial, steep learning curve a little easier.
Almost every open source project offers online help forums where you can ask questions and find help as you get started. These forums are incredibly valuable resources. However, for new users the amount of information can be more than a little overwhelming and time consuming to sort through. At each Web Geek Café session our instructors are right there over your shoulder helping you find the answers.
Live session sizes are small, with one experienced instructor and a maximum of ten students, and are custom-tailored to address the needs of each student. Each live session is held in comfortable settings such as a local coffee shops or cafés, so there is never a shortage of good coffee and food to keep your mind fully fueled.
